How can I set the New Tab Page so that it only shows my Bookmarks (Like chrome) and not the history ?

Posted

Hello, I've recently installed Firefox on my new PC after giving Chrome yet another chance (I've had bad experiences with it) and after seeing crashes everywhere I just gave up. I'm a long-time Firefox user but I've never been able to figure out how to prevent the New Tab Page from showing the Browser's History. Is there a way to make Firefox show Bookmarks and Folders on the NTP instead ? Also, is there a way to make the Bookmarks bar show on the New Tab Page ONLY ?

You can set the value of the pref browser.newtab.url using about:config to

  chrome://browser/content/bookmarks/bookmarksPanel.xul

See - http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config

The items on your Bookmarks Toolbar will be shown on the list under the Bookmarks Toolbar section.

Information about New Tab Page - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites

NOTE: Anyone with an extension/add-on that affects what is displayed on the new tab page (like TabMix Plus), you will need to inspect your options in the extension/add-on.

Thank You. What if I want to have the normal Firefox NTB with my Bookmarks ONLY ? (No history)

What is "Firefox NTB"?

The above pref setting will display your bookmarks as a html page in a tab when you choose to open a new tab </u>and does not include history</u>. Can you supply more information about what you are trying to accomplish?

Yes, sorry. I'd want the Standard Firefox New Tab Page with my Bookmarks ONLY. No history. AKA Chrome's New Tab Page.

I still do not understand. The above setting does NOT include history in the new tab page display.

Try the above setting to see if it gives you what you want.

You can not compare Firefox to Chrome as they are completely different.

Ok, here's what I'm trying to say.. When I visit a site (Without bookmarking it) and close Firefox and the open it again, it shows up in the new tab page in the panels with the rest of my history. Is there a way to prevent firefox from making the history appear in the new tab page ?

The setting that I gave you above will stop the display of the 9 (default) previously visited pages and will display your bookmarks in a tab in html format.

Have you tried the suggested pref setting that I posted above?

You can not have both the 9 (default) previously visited sites (thumbnails) and the bookmarks displayed in the new tab page. It is one or the other.

Yes, I did. So there's no way to stop Firefox from doing that.. Oh alright, I'll just keep the new Bookmarks page. Thanks.

In newer versions of Firefox it is possible to substitute your preferred sites on the New Tab Page in place of the ones Firefox displays by default. You can pin the ones you want to keep, and drag the others in from your bookmarks. See: Customize the New Tab page.

I don't know how similar that is to Chrome's New Tab Page, but if you prefer a graphical/thumbnail display and don't need access to all your bookmarks, it may be worth a look.

Edit: Actually, TheOldFox provided this link before, but you might not have realized the implications at first glance.

jscher2000:

The OP's question involved setting so that when opening an new tab, a list of his/her bookmarks are shown instead of the thumbnails of the usual 9 (default) sites visited.

The OP's reference to "history" appears to be the 9 (default) thumbnails which the OP wants to not see.

The about:newtab page shows pages that you have visited. So if you visit a page by clicking a bookmark then that bookmark will become a history item and will thus appear in one of the tiles on the about:newtab page.

If you want then you can customize the tiles and drag bookmark (and history) items in a specific tile to pin that web page to that tile.

You set the number of rows and columns that appear on the about:newtab page by modifying these prefs on the about:config page via a double-click.

  • browser.newtabpage.columns (3)
  • browser.newtabpage.rows (3)
