unwanted "launch application" box comes up when trying to download a file
On trying to download an exe file from a web page, the download page comes up and immediately goes to the 'launch application' box.

Can you try to update to Firefox 12, and tell me if it still happens there? 3.6 is no longer supported by Mozilla.
Also, what exe is it that you are trying to download?
This happens when I try to download any exe file from any web page. I have flashget installed and the normal download box with various options comes up but then is immediately replaced by the 'launch application' box.
Haven't updated to version 12 - don't like the layout and don't feel inclined to having to mod it to look like version 3.6
Thanks, Ted
If you start Firefox up in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox, does it work there?
Continuing to run 3.6 is not recommended, as there are multiple security holes in 3.6. You can really easily customize 12 to look exactly like 3.6. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/926330 and https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/luddite-ui/. Plus, with 3.6 you can't take advantage of the speed and performance improvements in 12, plus new web standards support!
You can try to reset (remove) the mimeTypes.rdf file to see if that helps.
Tried this, but no luck. Thinking about it, I suspect that maybe the "do this automatically ....." option on the 'you have chosen to open' box may have been accidentally ticked, thus causing the 'launch application' box to immediately come up. Unfortunately the first box doesn't stay on the screen long enough to even see if the box has been ticked, let alone change it.

If you remove the mimeTypes.rdf file then all current download actions should be removed and Firefox should ask what to do.
You can still check if there is an action for such files in Tools > Options > Applications
Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Went into safe mode and found that I was given a choice per the "you have chosen to open...." box. Selected "save file" and ticked the "Do this automatically..." box. Going back into normal mode I found it also now went straight to the "save file" options box.
Made the mistake of pushing my luck by deleting the MimeTypes.rdf file, only to find myself back to the the original problem both in normal and in safe mode.
Feel sure the problem is the "Do this automatically" option being ticked. The question is - where do I go to "uncheck it" when I no longer get access to the "you have chosen to open...." box.
