i have tried unsuccessfully several times to download the new version of firefox. can you tell me why?

Are you trying to use Firefox's internal updater by clicking Help then "Check for Updates"? It is possible that just got corrupted. Try going to www.getfirefox.com, and simply downloading and installing the new version over your old Firefox. all your settings and information will be saved and you'll be all up to date :)
