Why do I get black images?

I get sometimes black images when I open an image on Facebook and other sites. It happens often when I have more tabs open. I tried the following solutions but it did not help at all:

-clean cash -make sure that site permissions do not block images. -no antivirus is interfering with the browser -running Firefox in "safe mode" with all add-ons disabled -reinstalling Firefox

This does not happen with other browsers. So it seems to me that it is a bug in Firefox. I am using Firefox 10 with Windows XP SP3.

Any ideas?

Thank you Mido

So, you still have the problem in Save mode?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I did that, dint work. I even uninstalled Firefox with all personal data deleted then installed it again, I imported only my bookmarks, and I have still this problem.

Just as a hint, I found this problem on the web, there is a solution for it for Linux, they determined the cause: "X server using `DefaultDepth 16 and they proposed a solution which is using "Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps". I don't even know what that means, I don't use Linux, but I thought you might be a Linux expert and could tell me the equivalent solution for Windows XP. here is the thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/black-blocks-in-firefox-images-704593/

Can you open such a black image if you copy the link from the Tools > Page Info > Media window to the location bar?

Yes it opens. It opens also when I right-click on the image then I choose "view image".

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

still have the problem. I restarted FF in safe mode without any changes, but couldn't choose DEFAULT theme because all add-ons are disabled by safe mode, so did I misunderstand you, anyway, this theme is the only theme I have.

I'm thinking a possibility may be the OS, or the hardware somewhere. Since you say when you right click the black, it says view image, Im thinking it may not be. My theory is, an addon is interfering and causing it by a glitch of some sort, or the server(s) you are connecting to have some kind of problem with FF 10 (I believe you said you were running 10, I haven't noticed any problems yet on mine, and I'm running Win 7 Home premium 64-bit. That's what makes me think it could be OS related).

I created a new profile, still got the same problem! @Momokun: this is a valid theory. But this problem doesn't occur in Chrome or IE!

Were there any extensions installed in that new profile?

Does starting in Save mode in the new profile help ?

Finally I got it right. It was the graphic card, I used to have "ATI X1300 Pro 256MB" then I exchanged with "512 MB GeForce 8400GS 8400 GS", it works just fine. I don't know what exactly the problem was but it was for sure a hardware problem. Thanx for helping anyway.
