I guess it could be a new virus, but I've run up-to-date AVG, Adaware, and SpybotSD ... something just shut me out of using search engines from Firefox ... my Firefox is the slightly older version [3.6.25] simply because I don't like the new format they introduced , really was a step backwards as I see it, but the older version is still supposedly supported as I understand it... I have checked what sites are blacklisted and the cookies and can find no explanaton for this rather catastrophic and seemingly very deliberate shut-out ... seems like something a disgruntled person might put out on the web so it may be spreading ...

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

interesting possibility, thanks, but the Windows firewall is not set to block these search engine sites and indeed nothing has apparently changed in the firewall settings since the problem arrived.

Thanks greatly for your time and the help getting functional again, although I do not like the changes to Firefox and would have liked to know the cause of the problem... probably never will now unless it re-emerges ... we shall see I guess :) ... I notice support for the older version of Firefox is to be terminated , a shame in my opinion , but c'est la vie these days ...

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
