I have 4 tabs open every time I open firefox, it won't keep my homepage as the home page and it constantly asks to be the default browser is there any way to fix these issues.

I guess a hint of the cause of the problem would be in what is trying to make itself your home page. Sometimes finding the cause of a problem gets you solution(s) to one or more actual problems.
Under Tools ("Alt+T") > Options > General what do you have in the drop-down for "When Firefox starts:" if you don't have "Show my home page".
I have tried on numerous occassions to put my zoomshare website home page as my home page, yet it always opens the same 4 tabs and completely ignores my wishes. I'm not an imbecile and I'm extremely computer literate.
Did you try to delete the prefs.js file in the Firefox Profile Folder?

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

it's constantly opening the same 4 pages - grease spot, yahoo toolbar and 2 mozlla pages. I have deleted the js file. I have updated to the latest version. Maybe I should try to fnd an earlier version that didn't have this problem.
where do you find the profle folder because instructions given on the page don't work. I'm using windows 7
To find your profile Help > Troubleshooting information > "Open containing folder" or type "about:support" into the location bar then click on "Open containing folder"
I would be very wary of deleting prefs.js file, if you go that route, rename it rather than deleting it. Look to see what you have as your changes from defaults by looking in your about:config sorting on status so that "User Set" is at the top. I don't know about you, but I have 58+ pages at 30 variables per page, and I sure don't want to recustomize all my settings for Firefox and extensions..
- I guess it is safe to rename prefs.js as long is Firefox remains up, because Firefox will save what it has in a new file when it closes, and deleting might get rid of a file that was read-only (write protected), make sure you close Firefox soon after. Most changes you make to your profile are done with Firefox down, unless it has "user" in the filename but it was not mentioned to take Firefox down so is ambiguous especially if you shouldn't.
Tools > Options > General > ... make sure the drop-down at the top actually says "Show my homepage" for when Firefox starts.
Bring up about:config and filter on some of the pages that you don't want coming up to see what they are associated with. If you find something you can read more about most of the configuration settings in
Yahoo Toolbar is wanted by very few people and causes problems like opening Yahoo search page on new tabs, I expect that might be part of your problem.
By the way, it would be hard not to notice, but if any of the four tabs only show the favicon and you have space left on the tabs bar then they are app-tabs (pinned tabs). App-tabs should come up with a new session, and can be unpinned via the tabs context menu (right-click menu).

Can you all please stop treating me like I'm an idiot, of course I have tried to set my home page but it keeps ignoring the fact that I have set it to my preferred home page . Also could you please give more detail like where in the article (link) I should look to find out how to solve the problem. I appreciate your efforts but where do I find the info I need in the about config entries article or in the about config?
