I have tried to install the latest update 7.1 [?] a number of times only to be asked the question "do you have another copy of Firefox running? Do I have to uninstall Firefox 6 in order to install the latest update? That makes no sense.

You do not need to uninstall Firefox 6 to install Firefox 7.0.1

The problem that you are experiencing sounds like Firefox is "hanging at exit". That problem is frequently caused by an Extension or a Plugin. Read all of the following articles.
