This happened within the past 24 hours. I am not aware of having done anything to cause it. I have tried shutting down Firefox and restarting it, but the problem persists. I've looked for information under parental controls and tools\options, but I can't find anything

Firefox doesn't have any Parental Controls.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
