According to my computer firefox is running however I cannot open it

I have been using firefox for years, I now also use internet explorer, when I try to open firefox it does not open. I tried to uninstall so I could reinstall but it says I must close firefox. All of my bookmarks are very important to me on the firefox program. Can someone help?
