Hard to tell for sure without more details but here's a stab...

Tabs now have two styles in Firefox:

Traditional: About 2-inches wide, favicon on left, title text in middle, close tab (x) on right.

App Tab: Only wide enough to hold the favicon.

An App Tab can be closed by using Ctrl-Mouseclick to get it's dropdown menu and selecting Close Tab.

The App Tab can also be turned back into a Traditional tab by using Ctrl-Mouse and selecting Unpin Tab.

A Traditional tab has a Pin Tab choice that does the obvious.

I've closed the tabs with the close tab (x) but when I re-open Firefox the 3 tabs are back again, they are just traditional tabs, not app tabs, it's very frustrating!

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).
