Bookmarks disappear and can't bookmark new sites

A few weeks ago I upgraded to Firefox 4 on a 32 bit Win 7 Home Premium system. I'd gotten used to Firefox 4 when my all BOOKMARKS just vanished...one sessions they were there; when I restarted a new session they were GONE. I have a backup HTML file as well as a bookmarks.json file. I've tried all the tips in RESTORING/IMPORTING both - nothing happens trying either. I can get to booked marked locations from the HTML backup. In addition I find I can't re-bookmark the site when I get there via this method. HELP--why can't I get the bookmarks restored?

This can be a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
