That can a problem with the Ask.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)

Yes I Did It ... uninstall Ask.com toolbar.

If you hide it just go to View >>Tool bars >> and click to show it then there is an arrow in the end click on it to show more options and there is the uninstall option ....

I removed the Ask.com toolbar and it still will not open a new tab unless I right-click on a link and open as a work around.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
