I'm running Windows XP, latest update and Firefox 3.6.10. I would like to set GMail as my mailto application, but it's not listed. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox.

Chosen solution

Open your profile folder, for details of how to access it see the profiles article. Now close Firefox, and in the profile folder rename mimeTypes.rdf to mimeTypes.rdf.old

When you re-start Firefox the applications list will be reset to the defaults and should include mailto.

My problem was a variation of this: I wanted to make AOL my default mailto client. Using this information and some experimentation on my part I found that by choosing "Use other", pressing the Browse button, and filling in http://mail.aol.com/34290-411/aol-6/en-us/mail/DisplayMessage.aspx?ws_popup=true did the trick.
