Certificate problems can be caused by a number of reasons, including:

- Incorrect server settings – especially connection security or server mismatch. Confirm that your server settings are correct. Here are Windstream's recommended settings:

- Antivirus or Proxy – it can modify certificates with its own and interfere with connection security. As a test, disable them or create an exception for Thunderbird.

- Expired Certificate – due to incorrect date & time or genuine expiration. This would be only correctable by Windstream. They may already be aware of it and are working on a fix, so if you just wait a while the problem may go away. It might be worth a call to them to report the problem and get a status update.

Hello Lin, Thank you for your informative response. I did not carry out your instructions. What I did do was last night as I went to bed: I unplugged my modem and shut down my laptop. This morning, I restored the modem and turned the laptop on, The offending problem did not reappear. So I gave thanks to God and to Lin for being there to provide the solution. Capt. S.

Well, there you go, confirming one of my computer theories that if you just ignore the problem, half the time it will go away on "its own"! This time I bet it was an actual Windstream issue with their certificate and they were probably working in it even as you were posting. But we'll probably never know for sure.

All's well that ends well.
