Unable to Log in at Server - Posteo

srnordgren

Hello, I'm new to Thunderbird, trying to connect my accounts for the first time. I've tried linking my new Posteo email, and I'm getting the same error message that it looks like many people are getting for various accounts (especially gmail) -- "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." It's the correct username (email address) and password, and I'm selecting IMAP, which is the recommended configuration in Posteo's own instructions for linking with Thunderbird. I can't find any trouble shooting info that's not for gmail. (I haven't tried to link my gmail yet).

I would appreciate any help with this matter. I was excited to use Thunderbird, and now I'm wondering if I need to find a different option.

Instructions are here:

Your issue is probably caused by using the normal account password instead of the app password required by Posteo.

Thanks for responding -- Posteo says that their configurations are automatic for Thunderbird specifically and has a separate instruction list for Thunderbird. However, due to your advice I've created an app password in Posteo, but don't know how to use that in Thunderbird. There's no "app password" option on the drop down menu.

THANK YOU -- I realized it was called "encrypted password" and that setting worked.

Just to be clear, as I understand Posteo's instructions, the authentication method for the incoming and outgoing should be 'normal password', not 'encrypted password', as the connection is already encrypted (SSL/TLS security). But wherever a password is required in TB, the app password created on the Posteo site must be entered instead of the account password.
