Can anyone please explain why, when I type an email and use Bold, Underline, paragraphs etc the program actually changes some text to symbols like asterisks & underscore symbol instead of underline etc that I did not enter and in general makes the body of the email look terrible when it is sent and printed out. I have tried typing the message in Word first and then copying to the email but it still seems to change it when the email is sent. Does anyone know why and can this be fixed? The last couple of emails I have had to prepare in Word, save as pdf documents and then send as attachments and this is a long and tedious process just to send an email message even if it is a long message. Thank you.

Yeah, your attempt to fix your issue would only make it worse. Word is designed to put print on paper, it really does not do a very good job with web fonts.

In all probability you are using a font that only exists on your computer, so recipients get some sort of garbage facsimile.

  1. What font are you using?
  2. What provider are you sending your mail through? Yahoo for instance has a rather troubled history of sending mail in any language but US English.
  3. Does this change appear in your sent folder or only in the recipients inbox?
  4. What version of Thunderbird are you using?
