Using Firefox 45.2.0 and can't get plain text to bold or underline when surrounding it with * or _

How do I bold or underline plain text in Firefox? Surrounding with *text* or _text_ isn't working when I send a long message with several words to which I want to draw attention. I can do it with shorter messages.

Sorry, I meant to say Thunderbird, v 45.2.0. I've been playing with emails since I wrote this and find that it works for shorter series of words most of the time but not all the time and doesn't work for longer series of words.
