I installed the latest version of Thunderbird on my new Windows 11 PC, and when I try to save an attachment without opening it, it doesn't save. I need to open it and then I can save.

What version of TB are you using? That bug was fixed in v140.

The bug was not due to anything FF-related; Mcafee antivirus appears to be the cause. If you're using that, you'll have to disable live scanning.

The bug disappeared just as suddenly as it had appeared...

Are you using Mcafee?

I was having the same problem, but after disabling the mcafee realtime scanning, the problem got solved. I need to keep real time scanning on, is there a way out to save attachment while real time scanning is on? thanks.

No. You could contact Mcaffe Support, but I'm sure how far you'll get there. An immediate solution would be to get rid of Mcafee and let Windows Defender do it's thing.

Are you sure Windows Defender is as good as Mcafee? just afraid of today's computer environment. Please advise, thanks.

Yes - see https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/malware-protection-test-september-2025/. Equal Online Protection Rate, far fewer false positives. In addition, Defender has far less bloat than most others, costs nothing, and is ad-free.
