Backups of course. No recommended tools.

If the messages are in an account which was defined to Thunderbird as imap then the messages are not lost. If it was defined as pop and you did not elect to have messages kept on the server, and don't have a backup, then seek recommendations for a professional from people you know and trust - not some search on the internet.
