In Thunderbird go to Settings > General > Thunderbird Start Page and uncheck "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area".

Thank you Mapenzi and David for helping me solve the problem. I had in addition to play around with the quick filter. Been using thunderbird more than 20 years but never had this nonsense before!
