Updated Thunderbird to version 141.0 and now having issues with new email messages. When new messages are downloaded the subject line is blank, correspondents line is blank and the actual email message is being shown as the HTML layout. This also happens if a plain text email message is received. Any help is appreciated.

Are you using Bitdefender?

Yes I do use Bitdefender. How can Bitdefender all of a sudden cause issues? Just prior writing my reply I received a couple of new messages had to tell Thunderbird it's not junk and to show remote content and they appeared correctly. All of my previous emails prior to updating Thunderbird are all fine and I did not make any changes to any program. I think there's a bug i the new 141 version.

I started experiencing this exact problem earlier this week, Monday 8/11.

Using Thunderbird 140.1.1esr (32-bit) on Windows 10, with Bitdefender, to download emails from an Earthlink mailbox via POP3.

Most (but not all) new emails appear as blank lines in the Inbox list (no sender, subject line, etc) and the body of the text is the raw HTML source code of the message.

Messages on the server appear normal when viewed with Earthlink's webmail or via IMAP from an Android phone. As far as I can tell, only messages downloaded via POP3 are affected.

I will try the Bitdefender workaround offered by Ed and report back what happens.

A question for Matt: where is your mailbox located? If it is NOT at Earthlink, that would tend to rule out Earthlink's POP3 service as the cause of the problem, which would be helpful.

In response to dpercival, my thunderbird mailbox is located in the default location Thunderbird uses, and my internet provider is Optimum. To ensure I get the email messages I'm having Optimum forward the messages to my proton mail mailbox. I followed the recommendation from Ed and it appears to be working. Before I advise that my issue is resolved, will wait a week to see how Thunderbird behaves and report back.

Solution update posted at 8:48 Eastern time (12:48 UTC) Thursday by Alexlandru_BD, an admin at bitdefender, "The developers reverted the changes made in the last signature update and this should do the trick until a permanent fix is deployed. Just click on update in systray and reboot once completed. But keep in mind this change is being rolled out gradually, so it may not reach everyone at the same time.." @Ed, Thanks for your help with this. Your reply was not only quick but more importantly solved my issue right away!

I applied the Bitdefender setting change recommended by Ed (see below) and the problem went away.

From what I have seen in other threads on this problem, it appears that Bitdefender has acknowledged the problem was created by a Bitdefender update issued on Monday, and says it is corrected in subsequent updates. I haven't tried changing this setting back to see if that is the case.

Open Bitdefender

- go to Protection > Online Threat Prevention > Encrypted web scan > toggle it to Off

- restart TB
