Firefox includes a built-in DDG search option, but keeping the default (usually Google) should work without drama. If that is getting overridden, one possible culprit would be an extension. Do you have a DDG extension that you can configure to work the way you want? If it doesn't allow using other search sites, you probably can remove it by right-clicking (one button: Ctrl+clicking) its toolbar button and choosing Remove Extension. If that doesn't work or doesn't solve it, then you'll need to take a deeper dive... You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page.
