Yesterday Thunderbird worked just fine. This morning I tried to respond to several emails and got this error message: Sending of the message failed '"An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: [VO=1] Message blocked due to spam content in the message. Please check the message and try again."

There was no spam in the person's email... just text.

Next I tried to send a freshly created email with just a YouTube video... then the last half of the error message said: An error occurred while sending: RBL restriction: Blacklisted by Internal Reputation Service - 195.181.168.179

What is going on??? The SMTP settings are correct: Port 587 STARTTLS Help!!

Chosen solution

No, it was not the Internet Service Provider. I figured it out last night when I saw a green dot on the Avast icon in the systray. Avast had turned on the VPN and as soon as I disabled it the email went out smoothly.

Thunderbird is not the issue. Your e-mail service provider is blocking these messages. You must talk with them about the problem.

You seem to have two problems then. The first error message is clearly from your mail server.

Yes, but the other problem went away after I did a Thunderbird update. All is clear now. Thanks.

Most servers will block VPN because the IP it uses makes you appear as if a hacker. It would seem the IP address used by VPN was on a server spam filter list hence you got a refusal for spam and also the reference to a being blacklisted.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks, Toad-Hall.

I'm having this problem and I opened Avast One and it says the VPN is turned off. So I opened Control Panel and Programs and Features and found an iTop VPN and uninstalled it.

So, I don't have any VPN installed or turned on in Avast, but I still get the "Blacklisted by Internal Reputation Services error message. This has handicapped me because I can't use Thunderbird for email services anymore.

Removing one VPN and turning off another didn't help at all.

Basically the server is rejecting emails you send via smtp, this is not Thunderbird. Please check that Avast is not adding it's own info to your outgoing mail. This would be a setting in Avast. To fully check you do not have any AV product interfering - start up computer in 'Safe Mode with Networking' - you will need to connect your computer to router using an ethernet cable to do this. Then start start up Thunderbird and try to send.

You could be on a server block due to too many emails being sent - server spam filter may have your IP listed as sending spam. As the Chosen Solution does not help in your case, you need to see if your IP address or email address is on a blacklist. Try spamhaus : https://check.spamhaus.org/

You could try this to force a new IP address. Close down computer and switch off the router/hub to completely disconnect. Wait about 10 minutes - have a cup of tea - then switch on router, let it get all connected and then switch on computer and see if you have got a new IP address.

As a heads up, if a Chosen Solution does not help, you need to ask in a new question as your issue has nothing to do with this particular issue relating to a VPN.
