The msf file is an index of the messages contained in the associated mbox file that contains the message content, e.g. Inbox.msf is the index and Inbox (no extension) is the mbox. Copy the mbox into the Mail/Local Folders subfolder of the profile, with TB closed, then restart TB to view the folder with the same name as the mbox. Help/Troubleshooting Info, Profile Folder, Open Folder.

The simplest way to back up is just to copy the mailboxes.

Do you specifically want eml files as back-ups?

Are you storing messages in eml in Thunderbird?

You may want to use the add-on ImportExportToolsNG (from memory, I think that is the name) instead of programming your own back-ups.
