Markdown formatting on YouTube.

more options

Hi!

I've been using Markdown formatting on YouTube for aeons, converting any piece of text into bold (starting and finishing with an *asterisk*), italic (using _underscores_), and strike-through (with -hyphens-).

Yesterday I started to notice that the *asterisks* fail to change the fontweight (the other 2 options [italic and strike-through] still work); is there a reason for this? I keep all my updates up to scratch and didn't recently add, nor change anything, in my browser, so (imo) that can't be it. The mind boggles but, whatever it is that's causing it, I hope it can be fixed...

Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated!

It's not an "extension add-on" problem.

PS: If that would be the case, you wouldn't be able to repeat this manner of formatting in a YT comment. Go ahead, try it with Italics: Just wrap any word in underscores (as shown in my OP, so no spaces) and post it!

It may be a youtube feature. It doesn't work on this site, for example.

It's not a YT feature either, most users don't even know about it (and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in 15 years). And if that were the case, I wouldn't be able to format on Firefox before and/or currently not at all (and as I said before, Italics and Strike-Through still work, just converting to Bold)...

PS: I would be surprised if it worked here, since there's no need for it (ie, the formatting options are featured at the top of the comment box, so..).

This is a youtube feature; they could show the information completely sanitized (ie, what you put in comes out exactly the same, no xss shenanigans), but they decided to parse the markdown instead. Firefox has no control over this.

And no, markdown does not work here, but there is a similar system, with single quotes. two single quotes is italics and three is bold. links are handled via the square brackets, and lists are handled via # and *, for ordered and unordered lists, respectively.

"This is a youtube feature...no, markdown does not work here.."

Tbh, whether it is a YT feature or not (which I'm not unwilling to accept, since it doesn't work on any other Grooble platforms, just YT), or even if that is its correct moniker, it still doesn't explain how it was possible to work for a couple of months before, when posting on YT via Firefox (and still works with Italics and strike-through, just not Bold); it's no prob on Chrome. That's what's so strange imo... So, we're back to square one I guess.
