That is the address bar: it shows the address of the web page you are on, allows typing a new address to visit, and also allows searching. You cannot remove the address bar.

(There may be a style rule hack to hide it in certain circumstances, but since it's relevant to your security to know the page address, it's not recommended.)

I only use Thunderbird a few times a year, so I don't have a guess about where a new folder would come from.
