Everything is gone - bookmarks, history - everything

I was logged on, Firefox shut down, installed new updates, and wiped everything because of new privacy controls - bookmarks, history, settings, everything! To log into my account, I had to reset because I lost my password and couldn't get to the recovery key link. I have a backup bookmarks file from a couple of days ago, but it's missing some really important pages I just bookmarked last night and there's no history for me to reference. First of all, why did Firefox do such a drastic update with no notice and secondly, is there anything I can do to restore everything I'm missing? I'm so upset I'm thinking about removing Firefox as my default browser. TIA for your help.

you may chek, if this directory (Windows 7) is still there:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

if yes, here you'll find Firefox data storage, e.g. the directory "bookmarkbackups" stores some bookmarks history files. they may be copied to the bookmarkbackups directory of e.g. a new Firefox profile. See https://support.mozilla.org/de/kb/firefox-profile-erstellen-und-loeschen#w_die-profilverwaltung-starten for details. hope that helps a bit .... jürgen.
