Try the Firefox SafeMode and see if you can initiate printing from within Firefox.

A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons. (If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)

1. You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the Shift key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

1. Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

Hi holger. nocon, what method are you using to summon the Print Preview screen? You should get that screen using either:

• "3-bar" menu button > Print
• (menu bar) File > Print Preview (you can tap the Alt key or F10 key to show the menu bar temporarily)

Are those not working? What happens when you try them?

There is a keyboard shortcut to print bypassing the preview, which is Ctrl+p. Does that pop up a Print dialog? Obviously not the same thing, but it would be odd if that doesn't work, either.

(There are some built-in pages which can't be printed/previewed, so please test on a web page.)

Yes, there pop up the Print dialog "Print" with the "General" tab ! But not together with a website !

Was there any difference testing in Firefox's Safe Mode as mentioned in the first reply? In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
• (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

I restarted in Safe Mode. If I now go to print, the message "Print preview" appears, with progress: Prepare, but nothing else.

And the image of the website has disappeared and only a small rotating circle can be seen together with the message "Print preview" in progress!

Hi Holger, is it a very long or complex page? I don't know why it would take so long to "prepare" the preview.

I closed the message and tried to print another website. Now the message doesn't even appear anymore!

I wonder whether your Firefox installation is damaged. You could do a reinstall. However, this test might be worth doing first:

New Profile Test

This takes about 3 minutes, plus the time to test print preview.

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like June2020, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system so we can get a clean test.

Can you call up Print Preview on a simple site? complex site?

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (June2020 will remain available for future testing.)

IMPORTANT: Creating a new profile may change your default. If your regular profile has a Set as Default Profile button after this test, click that to make sure your next startup doesn't yield a surprise.

Yes, that is where the "hidden normally" Menu Bar appears at the top of the Firefox window via using the F10 or Alt keys.

Hi jscher2000, the test worked well ! But my regular Firefox profile does not show the Print Preview!

Hi Holger, it sounds like a setting in your regular profile is likely to be causing the problem. However, tracking it down could be a little bit difficult. You could try some about:config searches side-by-side in each profile. Or you could try transplanting some files one at a time to the test profile to see whether they cause the problem, or try hiding files one at a time in your regular profile to see whether we can spot the culprit that way. In both cases, files should only be changed in a profile folder after the Firefox window(s) using it have closed.

The main settings file is called prefs. js (without the space) and it lists out nearly all the customized preferences you see in about:config. Since it is a .js file, you don't want to double-click it to view its contents, but instead you can right-click > Edit if you like. This is likely to contain a lot of printer-related settings, but I don't know whether those are important for this problem.

I'm really just thinking out loud here, I think, because I'm not sure what explains the problem.

Hi Holger, I don't think a reinstall will really help because it will keep your same profile.

You could try this:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

• "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
• (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
• type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows/File Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

• "3-bar" menu button > Exit
• (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename prefs. js to something like prefsOLD. js. (If you can't see .js extensions in Windows Explorer, you can set Windows to show ALL file extensions. Start Firefox back up again and it should have its default settings mostly. Does Print Preview work?

If not, you can dump the new prefs. js file and "undo" the renaming to get back to where you were.
