Shift+F2 restart no longer available?
Recently, there was a very simple one line command bar that one could get to from within firefox by pressing Shift+F2. It allowed one to take screenshots and restart the browser. But i notice it is no longer there in Firefox 70.0, is this an oversight. Some articles refer to it as GCLI.
Additional System Details
- User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:70.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/70.0
The GCLI is no more (since Firefox 62).
There is a "helper command" to capture screenshots from the Web Console since Firefox 62:
Or there's a button.
Note that the builtin Firefox screenshot extension is using the API as the developer tools version of the screenshot feature.
You can find items like "Take a Screenshot" and the Bookmark Star in the drop-down list that opens if you click the "Page actions" button (3-dot icon at the right end of the location/address bar). You can right-click an item in the "Page actions" drop-down list to add its button to the location/address bar for easy access.
You can find a restart button on the about:profiles page.
The BIG Advantage of SHIFT+F2 was that even when your machine is bogged down, it worked well. Opening a new TAB to get about:profiles might take several minutes. I use several different firefox profiles daily, so a quick built-in accurate way to restart just that particular firefox instance helps.
The screenshot was the least used part.
I use multiple versions of firefox at once: Nightly64bit, 32bit for special java iLO, iDRAC, IPMI apps, a really old 32bit ESR for old hardware, 64bit release, and so on....
"SHIFT+F2 made it quick to restart the current firefox with keyboard focus, but with that gone, the alternatives in order of increasing unresponsiveness:"
1. "about:performance can be helpful finding tabs using most ram and CPU to try to kill."
2. "about:profiles and click on Restart Browser"
3. "When on Windows, the following PowerShell will find all the parent and child firefox.exe processes using WMI, so it helps find the different profiles as long as delineated at the command line:" get-wmiobject -Query "select * from Win32_Process where name='firefox.exe'" | ft -AutoSize -Property CreationDate, ParentProcessID, ProcessID, CommandLine
It got removed. In the console, you can now use :screenshot, see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console/The_command_line_interpreter for documentation.
