set google.co.uk to be default search engine

I can't believe this is still a problem, I am upgrading to a new laptop and so have to go through setting google.co.uk to be my default search engine - again!? - but I can't seem to make it happen. Can someone please give me the steps again. and can someone explain why it isn't possible to just choose google.co.uk to be the default - there's a whole world out there that isn't in the .com space

Thanks - I didn't know Mozilla had that agreement and I certainly don't understand why they would agree that! but the first suggestion was exactly what I wanted.
