Hello folks,

I decided to do a clean reinstall of Thunderbird (latest, 60.6.1) on macOS Mojave (latest, 10.14.4) due to some problems with emails losing certain tags and a few incorrect email dates.

I have my own domain name with Ionos, so I'm used to having to manually configure my accounts. But now, Thunderbird isn't accepting it on the "Set Up an Existing Email Account" dialog box, and I've tried several times, with two different accounts, on and off VPN. I still get the "Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account" error. In fact it doesn't seem to be checking at all.

However I know the configuration still works, because as a workaround I can use a Gmail account, set it up, then go back and manually edit Account Settings. However, I can only use a given Gmail account once for this, or things get very confused.

I'd love to have a way to bypass the automatic checking altogether; I think that would solve the problem in my case.

Chosen solution

Select File/Offline/Work Offline to go offline, or click the double-monitor icon at the left end of the status bar. Then, add the account as before, but click Advanced config. since the setup wizard has been bypassed. Go back online once the account is set up.
