I cannot save bookmarks or import them from other browsers or save my browsing history. Every time I boot Firefox I get a red bar at the top of my screen that says bookmarks and browsing history cannot be saved because some file is being used one of my internet security programs. I use Malwarebytes and Norton security on my laptop.

I have followed the online instructions several times to try to fix the problem with no luck. I love the speed of the browser because it totally blows Chrome and Edge out of the water but I have type all of my URLs in because I cannot save or import them from my other browsers.

I need help to fix this problem.

Hi Barron1961,

First apologies for the time it took to respond. I am a little confused if you are seeing this issue on Firefox for iOS or on a desktop computer. I am not aware of anti-viruses for the iOS devices so I will try to provide help for a desktop version of Firefox below.

I did some research on the topic and found this previous question that solved this issue by reinstalling Firefox over the current installation.

The steps that they tried before were going to the about:support page in a new url, then scrolling down to the bottom of the page under "Places Database" and clicking on "Verify Integrity".

If these do not help, can you please share a little more information on wether or not you are using another program to back up your Firefox profile or check the permissions of the profile folder found: Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data and please share what operating system and version of Firefox that is installed on the desktop.

Thank you.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page
in case errors are reported close and restart Firefox and retry

If "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
