Firefox has begun opening a new tab, when I click on a link, e.g. a new article in the Times and then asks if I will allow it. These are usually ads or questionnaires which I do not want to open. But I have to jump to that new tab to close it. This is an annoying nuisance, and did not use to happen.

I see you are using an ad-blocker.

The ads you are seeing, are they in a separate window, or part of a site webpage?

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Ran admail scanner, which removed two files, and the problem is not happening now. I did the same several weeks ago, with no positive results. Thanks, Harvey

Use the mal scanners now and then. And be careful when installing new software.

It seemed to help on some sites at first, but the problem continues on others. Firefox does not open the ads, but opens a new tab, and asks for permission to open it. Since I do not want them, I then need to keep closing blank tabs. Harvey

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Can you attach a screenshot that shows that Firefox asks for permission?

Opening Firefox in safe mode stopped the new tabs appearing, but hundreds of ads began to appear on the pages that i was reading. Re original question: The message in the new tab reads on top left: " Firefox prevented this page from automatically redirecting to a new page."

On top right is a box containing "ALLOW"

the site it usually wants to open is http://reddmn.com/scz?..... Harvey

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
