Hi,

I have a html5 chat where you can send mp3 sounds so everyone else in the room can hear them but not if you have firefox. Why is that? It works fine on chrome and every other browser.

Thank you.

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hi,

I tried that but the problem is still there. I even looked at the console on devtools and I can see the line that says GET XHR http://example.net/chat//hurry.mp3 [HTTP/1.1 304 Not Modified 160ms] so its making the request but nothing is heard.

So its true firefox doesnt support mp3 natively? Is there any way around?

You need to have support for MP3 at the operating system level to be able to play MP3 files with the Firefox HTML5 media player.

You mean support on the server where the website is hosted?

cor-el just said on your side. So if you don't have software support installed locally it will not work.

I have the needed software. I can hear the mp3 if its a player embedded but not with the GET XHR command. Also, I asked a friend to test it and he can hear the sounds but he has an older version.

I suggest you to install flash plugin on your browser. Please follow below steps for installing.

Installing the Flash plugin manually

Go to Adobe's Flash Player download page and download the Flash installer. ( https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ )
Caution: Adobe's download page may include a checkbox for optional software (such as Google Chrome or McAfee Security Scan) that is selected by default. If you do not clear the checkbox before downloading, that software will be installed on your computer when you open the Flash installer.
When the download has finished, close Firefox.
Click the Firefox menu Fx57Menu , then click Exit.
Open the Flash installer file you downloaded and follow the instructions.

Note: If you are having problems with the Flash installer from Adobe's download page, you can use this Flash Player installer link to directly download the full installer. https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

I had already installed flash but I installed it from your link anyway and sounds are still not heard. I dont think its flash related.

I do not hear sound either.

It is an mp3 file retrieved via XHR as the Web Console shows a successful request, but isn't played for some reason. I tried other Firefox versions like 52 ESR and it doesn't work there as well.
