A drop down box keeps coming down asking for a master password and I can't keep it cancelled and my password is not accepted.
This happens most times I try using firefox and I can't get past it to search.
Chosen solution
Did you try to disable the Password Manager and remove the checkmark?
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security: Logins: [] "Remember logins for sites"
This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that are blocked.
- check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions"
Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).
"Clear the cache:
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.
- Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Seems most likely you're deleting cookies/passwords when you exit the browser check plugins it might be easy fix or just get add-on like master password.
Important: Without a master password, someone with access to your computer can view the passwords you have saved in Firefox. Click the menu button and choose Preferences. Click the Privacy & Security panel. Uncheck mark Use a master password. ... Enter the current password to confirm you are authorized to remove it.
Hi texture9Lady, usually the Master Password dialog will come up in one of these situations:
- When you visit a page for which you saved a login in Firefox's password manager, and you have not entered the Master Password recently to unlock saved logins
- If you have set up Firefox Sync, within a minute after starting Firefox, when Firefox tries to connect to Sync
Does the dialog seem to appear in one of those cases, or at some other time?
These articles have more info on this feature:
In the last two days I have "forgotten" my password and changed it twice. It is still NOT recognized! I have one site where it is not letting me in--for two days. It is a diet program and I can't get any recipes. By now I am extremely frustrated with Firefox!
I can't seem to uncheck use password. I've gone to another new one and it is not accepted. One site especially is giving me trouble. I've not been able to get in for a long time and now even it won't accept the given password for the site
I'm getting a little confused between the different passwords.
The Master Password protects passwords you save in Firefox in case someone gains access to your computer. That's it's only purpose. If it creates more problems than it solves, perhaps you should not use it right now?
I've been trying really hard to not use it. I can't seem to get rid of it and that's the problem. The box that drops down asking for the password will not cancel and will not accept my password. I've gone into settings and tried all of the suggestions and I've had no success there either. I cannot get the box to not use a password to uncheck. I've changed the password several times.

I am having the same problem with *every* page loaded in Firefox. 100% of the time. Repeatedly. The drop down menu keeps coming down, I know my master password that I am inputing is correct. It just comes down again.
I have done all of the steps suggested including clearing all cookies. I also uninstalled and reinstalled the software/app both on my phone and on my laptop. It seems like the only solution offered here is to not use the sync option, which is very disappointing. I was looking forward to syncing Firefox on my phone.
MacBook Air 10.13.3 and ios 11.2.5 on an iphone 7plus
Is there really no other solution that the ones offered here? Is this a bug that needs fixing?

What does the drop-down look like. Can you post a screenshot of it?
To confirm that you and Firefox are on the same page about your Master Password, is it accepted when you use the buttons on the Preferences page:
- Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
- Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
- Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
- Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it
In the left column, click Privacy & Security.
On the right side, click the "Saved Logins" button. Firefox usually will prompt for your master password at that point, and it should definitely prompt when you click the "Show Passwords" button. Does it work there?

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it and am really baffled. Yes with regards to confirming the Mac 3 bar menu, Preferences, etc.
When I go to Privacy and Security and click on "saved logins" it asks me for my master password and gives me the dropdown menu again. Doesn't work.
Attached is an example screenshot - and to confirm again, this is happening not with any particular sites, but with all sites, including my FF home

That suggests either that you are not entering the password Firefox expects, or that something is interfering with the entry. Users of some security software have reported that when they type in forms, the characters are scrambled by their anti-keylogging software. If you have that kind of feature, I would expect to see it in other places where it is actually visible and not only in password fields.
Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option/alt key when starting Firefox. (Windows users: hold down the Shift key instead.)
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
Mixed success...
Some sites now have no master password dropdown at all (phew) - but Facebook and MyFitnessPal still have it. (I had cleared my cache, weird)
(FYI the reason I know the master password is correct is because I went to my phone where I am logged in with the master password and changed the master password just to make sure, then I logged back in using it.)
So specific sites? Will I have to be in SafeMode forever?

Oh, that could be a different password:
- Firefox Account login -- the login you use to connect to Sync and other Mozilla services -- this is the same across all your devices and installations of Firefox
- Master Password -- a password used to unlock your saved logins, including your Firefox Account login and your website logins -- this is set on a device-by-device basis and may be different on different devices and installations of Firefox
Wait what? Isn't the idea of a "master password" that it be across different devices? I thought that was the point.
So it looks like maybe I've misunderstood what Firefox meant by "master password" I thought it was for the purpose of syncing across everything.
Let me go back and change them - (really surprised and confused now!)
OK, you were right - something is wrong with the "master password" which is not what Firefox expects. I changed my Firefox account password, then restarted everything and now my iphone is showing up as a device and the bookmarks are syncing (yay!)
I can't reset my master password because it says my current password is incorrect. It won't let me uncheck the box "use master password" either.
Can you help me reset my master password?
You can reset the master password. This deletes the locally saved passwords, but it should not (!!) affect your Firefox Account or Sync data. I haven't gone through this myself, so I can't guarantee that. You might want to try a few other guesses first.
Phew! Yes that did it - sorry, I didn't mean to waste your time, I misunderstood the concept.
I guess feedback as a dumb user might be that I was introduced to the concept of a master password when I downloaded the app on my phone. I was trying to get them to sync and was getting articles about using a master password coming up - which (since my brain was there) I took to have something to do with syncing.
It looks like all is well
Thank you again for your patience and help. Cheers, Cynthia
Probably "Master Password" is not the best name for it. It's hard to think of a good name for it...
