Does it make any difference if you use the HTTPS address:
You didn't mention what you tried so far, so I'll suggest "the usual":
If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working:
Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
(1) Clear Firefox's Cache
See: How to clear the Firefox cache
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.
(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
- right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
- click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button
In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.
If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.
If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
- Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
and OK the restart.
Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).
Any improvement?
clearing cache and cookies no joy. safe mode, OK. But of course I don't want safe mode, so what is next? Thx.
Safe Mode:
- disables extensions
- disables hardware acceleration (but HA usually is important for Google Maps)
- disables userContent.css/userChrome.css customization files (most users do not have)
- disables JavaScript compilers (Google sites will run slower)
You can view, disable, and often remove extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
- type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return
In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any system extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything that might interfere with Google sites? If in doubt, disable, or click Options and see what you can adjust.
Any improvement?
I did try disabling some extensions, but no improvement. I had thought that this latest FF, with all the rules and changes, was supposed to be most stable and accepting of the newly rewritten add-ons. So it is disappointing such is not the case. The numbers add-ons I'm using, and less as some have not been rewritten and/or are no longer needed, are about 12. I am also seeing parts of websites cut off, typically at the top, and popovers that no longer do. So, I'll disable all, hope I don't lose any settings, restart FF, and see what happens.
Here are my results: FoxClocks 4.4.9 is the culprit. Disabling it brings Google maps back, and resolves other issues, such as a blank white space at the top of MSN.com, etc. Thx.
Thank you for naming names. What an unexpected culprit.
I agree! Must be some unintended consequence. I have informed the developer. :-(
I have same problem plus more, such as PDFs are black (no visible content), charts on various news websites, such as NY Times, are empty of data. Going to safe mode corrects all of that but (as stated in above post) do I always want to be in safe mode? I cleared cache as well and that didn't work. I'm using a Mac OS 10.13.x, FF 57. As a comparison, I used Google Chrome and did not have any of these issues with maps, PDFs, etc. I have also manually disabled all the add-ons and that didn't work. I think I will revert back to the previous version of FF.
Hi rcbuitron, I'll give you further suggestions on your thread here: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1191607
I had this problem and, after trying Safe Mode and one or two other suggestions, eventually confirmed it's FoxClocks after seeing the suggestion in this thread, an entirely unexpected cause; I have no ad blockers installed.
To end the problem go FoxClocks/Tools/Status Bar and ensure that "no transform" is enabled. If the setting is "use transform" it will block Google Maps.
I would have been very unhappy if I had had to disable FoxClocks permanently as it is my favourite plugin.
