My messages from Thunderbird appear with odd characters replacing tabs.

Messages look fine in my composition window, when the messages are received the <tab> character is replaced with three A characters. The attached image shows a message that I have sent to myself.

I'm sure there is a character encoding setting somewhere that is causing this. Any suggestions?
