Today from the morning my FF (55.0.3 -up-to-date - 64 bit) stopped playing the YouTube videos. It shows the primary YouTube screen with the "Recommended videos" thumbnails. When one is chosen it shows a black screen with the Play and other buttons, but nothing in addition - looks like it doesn't load the rest things (forum, Login icon etc.).

When pressing the Play button nothing happens.

- No updates were performed - No add-ons (FF) were added - Restarted the PC several times - same problem - Updated the FlashPlayer - same problem

Important: no problem detected with Chrome, everything works fine as usual.

Solved the problem by the option "Refresh Firefox". Interesting, what was the issue?... :)

Same problem returned. Nothing is played in the YouTube, but this time it is a bit different.

When choosing a clip the complete page of the video appears, but pressing the "Play" button doesn't achieve anything.

There is the following message instead of the video:

your browser does not recognise any of the video formats

But when clicking on the verification link it says, that my browser supports all the required formats:

What does this browser support?

   V HTMLVideoElement
   V H.264
   V WebM VP8
   V Media Source Extensions
   V MSE & H.264
   V MSE & WebM VP9

What's going on???

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
