Are you using Sync to sync the bookmarks?

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync while performing maintenance/repair efforts to files in the Firefox profile folder.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Actually the problem is that I have suddenly acquired a duplicate ‘Other Bookmarks’ folder. The original bookmarks folder was where all my new bookmarks went and has the folder symbol next to it with the arrowhead so that I can open the folder. The new ‘Other Bookmarks’ folder doesn’t have the folder symbol, it has an icon, but it acts as a folder because it has the arrowhead to open it, and this icon opens like a folder.

When I close all the folders in the bookmarks sidebar, there is remaining The Bookmarks Toolbar, The Bookmarks Menu, plus this new icon called Other Bookmarks that opens as a folder.

The extension Bookmark Deduplicator indicates (instantly) that there are no duplicates (but there are), and the extension Places Maintenance goes through a tidying process, but doesn’t remove the duplicate Other Bookmarks icon/folder.

I have turned off ‘sync’; in fact I had never activated it. Anyway, I would like to get rid of one of the ‘Other Bookmarks’ folders.

If you have multiple "Other Bookmarks" folders then see if you can remove the one that is in the main "All Bokmarks" folder via the right-click context menu.

If that isn't possible then you will have to delete places.sqlite.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

When I look at “All Bookmarks”, I see only one “Other Bookmarks” folder, although it doesn’t look like a folder, it looks like an icon.

(Just to refresh, my original problem is that my bookmarks are all duplicated into two “Other Bookmarks” folders; one looking like a folder, and the other looking like an icon; if I add or remove a file or bookmark to one of them, it is duplicated in the other).

The Places Maintenance extension appears to take me through the wizard, but it doesn’t solve the problem.

You say to remove all places.sqlite files. Sorry, but I have no idea how to do this (or what it even means)!

The regular "Other Bookmarks" folder has a special icon like other system folders (Bookmarks Menu and Bookmarks Toolbar) and is in the "All Bookmarks" folder. If the other copy shows a normal folder icon then this isn't the real folder and you can try to remove this folder. Make a backup of the bookmarks before trying to repair just in case.

There is also "Organize -> Undo" in the Bookmarks Manager to undo any bookmark action.
