When I try to send I get the following error message:

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 5.3.4 554 5.2.0 STOREDRV.Submission.Exception:SendAsDeniedException.MapiExceptionSendAsDenied; Failed to process message due to a permanent exception with message Cannot submit message. 16.55847:69000000, 17.43559:0000000060010000000000000200000000000000, 20.521. Please check the message and try again.

I've tried numerous times. No problem receiving e-mails.

I assumed that the program had become corrupted and so tried to uninstall it through the Control Panel. However it wouldn't uninstall. So I opened Thunderbird in Program Files(x86) Uninstall folder but did not find an uninstall.exe file, only a helper.exe file.

My version is 52.2.1 running under Windows 10

Chosen solution

Eureka! Problem solved. My outgoing e-mails used the alias address for both From and Reply to.

I changed the From address to the MSN address in order to conform with the outgoing server address.

I'm speculating that Mozilla changed the way it accesses the outgoing server in the latest version.

Upon further reflection I now believe that this situation did not result from a change in the TB software but rather it was caused by a change in the Outlook outgoing server software. I am speculating that this software now checks that the e-mail address used to access the server is the same as the From address in the message. That would explain the meaning of the error message produced by the server when the addresses differ. I wonder what problems this change is intended to avoid.

I have all sorts of issues with that error as it appears to be related to MAPI and probably exchange server.

I managed to uninstall TB using the Revo uninstaller. I then downloaded a fresh TB installer and reinstalled. The problem has persisted. In the meantime I have saved my Profile folder. I didn't delete the original copy and so the new installation used it.

It doesn't happen on g-mail. I changed the MSN server as you suggested. When I changed the port to 587 the default changed to 110. Unfortunately the problem persists. It used to work with the original settings, Might it have been caused by the most recent update? Here's the most recent update info.: account2 (none) Local Folders None Normal password account3 (pop3) smtp.office365.com:587 STARTTLS Normal password smtp-mail.outlook.com:587 STARTTLS Normal password true account4 (imap) imap.googlemail.com:993 SSL/TLS Normal password smtp.googlemail.com:465 SSL/TLS Normal password true

Sent a test message. Received: "Status:Connected to outlook.office365.com" Then, after a while: Send Message Error

Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) outlook.office365.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again.

I tried several times.

Incoming mail works using the original server but the outgoing mail with the revised server doesn't.

I don't know if this is the same message, but here it is:

There seem to have been some problems.

Doesn't work with smtp.office365.com either. Same problem. Is there a way to install the most recent version in case it's a version problem?

I have used every version of Thunderbird from 2 to the current daily builds of version 56 and have no problems sending from outlook so I seriously doubt it is a version issue.

What I do see is in the error message a statement to the effect SendAsDeniedException I would guess that to be complaining that the email address sending is not the one whose credentials were used to connect to outlook.com.

For example the mail is from bill@outlook.com and the credentials used are for fay@outlook.com

I suggest you go tho this link https://outlook.live.com/owa/?path=/options/popandimap

What does the site tell you are the account settings to use? In my case they are.

POP Server name: pop-mail.outlook.com Port: 995 Encryption method: TLS

IMAP Server name: imap-mail.outlook.com Port: 993 Encryption method: TLS

SMTP Server name: smtp-mail.outlook.com Port: 587 Encryption method: STARTTLS

I use an alias e-mail address hgruenberg@ieee.org for Reply To and also From. That has been the same for years. Could there be an issue in my switching to an Outlook account. An Outlook icon suddenly appeared on my task bar and it accesses my msn e-mail account. I used to access this through Hotmail. I have used the several alternate outgoing servers suggested in the Mozillazine kb article but none of them work. I tried to follow the instructions in the article about switching to the Outlook account but I couldn't find the gear icon when I opened the task bar icon.

more options

As to the possible e-mail address discrepancy: I use hsgru@msn.com to sign into Outlook and that is the same address that appears in the Outgoing Server setting

more options

hgruenberg@ieee.org will need it's own SMTP server and account. I have no idea if hotmail/out6look can be configured to use another address. I know if you use an outlook alias it simply changes the from to the primary account, so I am not hopeful. Gmail will let you, if you pre register the address with them. By why not use the correct SMTP server for the email address.

more options

Do you think that Microsoft has made a change in its server software? These settings have worked for years and only suddenly have returned the error problem. The ieee.com alias website forwards incoming mail to msn.com. And this in turn is processed successfully by the incoming server.

Outgoing mail does not go to ieee.com at all but is processed directly by the outgoing server using the msn e-mail user name and password. So, I don't understand why it is necessary to create an ieee.com outgoing server account. There is no problem processing outgoing mail with the same user and password settings with Outlook.

more options

It is necessary because MSN obviously are not playing nice any more.

The use of account as you suggest sending from someone elses server is becoming more and more problematical as recipient servers check the domain the mail comes from, and lists the server as a spammer as the reverse look up does not match the sending address.

Why even have mail sent to msn at all, mail aggregation is Thunderbird strong suit. and one of the reasons I use it. With all the forwards going on, it is a wonder anyone ever get their mail.

Eureka! Originally my From and Reply to addresses were both the aliases. This time I changed the From address to the msn e-mail address and left the Reply to address as the alias. That worked.

I suspect that Mozilla changed something in the TB software when accessing the outgoing server in the latest version.
