All of a sudden I'm being asked for a password when sending outgoing mail, but when I enter the only password I use it tells me it's incorrect

I've been using Thunderbird for my blog email for a while with no problems, but recently it started asking me to log-in when attempting to send outgoing mail. When I enter the only password I have for this account I get a message saying the password is incorrect. None of my own troubleshooting has worked so I appreciate any help I can get. I'd be grateful for any help as this is very frustrating.

If the provider of the current outgoing server changed their policy to be like Gmail's, that would be a problem, so I suggest you create, if it doesn't already exist, an outgoing server for the non-sending account (Tools/Account Settings, select Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the left pane, then Add.. or Edit.. an smtp server), then follow the instructions above to make the ABC account send through the ABC smtp server.

Is the account set to send on the smtp server associated with that account or another account? Tools/Account Settings, select the account in the left pane and then check Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane. If the smtp server is for a different account, the first account may not allow sending on that server. Gmail accounts, e.g., enforce sending on the same accounts.

Also, open Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, SHow Passwords and check if there's an obsolete entry for the smtp server.

It could also be due to having set up 2-step verification and not entering the app password in TB.

Thank you for the reply, sfhowes. I checked everything you recommended and all looks okay. Like I mentioned, I can receive messages fine and the outgoing mail issue only started very recently. I did notice my incoming mail and outgoing mail are on different servers. Could that be what's causing the issue?

I appreciate your help, but I'm feeling more confused now than before I posted my question. At the most basic level, do you know of any reason why I would suddenly be asked to enter a password only when trying to send messages? AND when I enter said password why it's saying the one I entered is incorrect? It's like I have two separate passwords without having set them up.

It's possible the outgoing server is suddenly asking for a password because they've changed their server settings or password requirements. Many services are 'hardening' their email security policies, and you can't count on them to inform you of the changes with a friendly reminder.

In order to get your system working, I suggest you open Help/Troubleshooting Information, click 'Copy text to clipboard', and paste it in a reply here (omit the entries for printers), so we can offer specific advice. Also, please indicate if you have an antivirus program set to scan mail folders, as this can be another source of password interference.
