This only happens when trying to log into a bank. The pop up can not be closed. It even popped up when joining this site. I was able to ad "1234" as the password (Not the real password) and close the box. I am trying to find out if this is a virus or something new in firefox. I have run Malwarebytes, Avast internet security, Boot time scan. Nothing found. I have unistalled fire fox and run cleanup, no change. Can someone confirm this box is being generated by Firefox. Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

problem solved, After diving me crazy for weeks, turns out all I had to do was add the Last Pass addon to Firefox. I have no idea why it was removed during the last upgrade but, I went back to 53.03 and logged into y last pass account. It gave me the option to install into Firefox. After the addon was installed, no more pop up boxes, Firefox working great. I want to personally thank those who took time to help me try and resolve this issue. Anyone else have the issue should open Last Pass on their desktop and navigate to the browser support area. There it will walk you through installing the Last Pass addon, then everything will go back to working normally. No need to worry about Chrome. Any updates I have applied, leave the last pass addon in place. Hope this helps someone, and thank you for all your help.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Hello, Here is the screen shot of the problem. As I said I have run Avast boot time scan. Malware bytes, SFC /SCANNOW no issues found. I also uninstalled Firefox then reinstalled and performed a FireFox Refresh. This pop up on happens with Firefox, not Chrome. Any help would be apprreciated

Are you using the Password Manager or any password add-ons?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

Type about:preferences<enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select

Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.

  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from

Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Then restart. Poke around safe websites. Are there any problems?

I tried all the items you suggested, the problem has now become worse than before. Even logging into this forum i got the pop up. it would not go away until i put in the fake password "1234". Do you think it would be worth uninstalling Firefox and rolling back to maybe version 47. I am currently running version 54. What is scarring me is the request for " The Master software Device". It does not show up using Chrome or MS Edge. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Are you using the Password Manager to store passwords?

Are you using Sync to Sync any data?

Try to rename/remove the secmode.db file in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

I was able to delete the "secmod.db" out of the profile folder. Once this pop up window opens, it seems like I can click on "Cancel" multiple times and it will close. the only other way, is to open the "task Manager" and end the Firefox process. The only reason I worry about this, is because it only opens with Firefox and the wording in the box "Please enter the password of the Software Security Device" as shown in the screen shot. Now it pops up for all bank entries and even my Google login. I am just wondering if anyone has run into this problem. I do use "LastPass" but it has never done this in the past. I really appreciate all the help. maybe we can get this solved.
