Firefox gradually becomes more and more unresponsive during a session and then crashes when exiting

Well, my previous thread on this issue appears to have been deleted, and my ability to log in also until I reset my password - any explanation for this would be greatly appreciated.

However the basic problem remains as per the subject line.

The fundamental problem of responsiveness remains but the timeout crash has reduced in frequency since the last couple of upgrades.

Since the last crash I have been distracted by yet another firefox problem related to live bookmarks whereas Firefox, in it's wisdom, now seems to be changing the ID of the bookmarks thus breaking add-ins like brief that rely on the ID number being constant... sigh...

I just wonder if Mozilla is serious about Firefox anymore, for me they have made it almost a nightmare to use, every update seems to break something.

Where to go?

About how long between starting Firefox, and this slowness begins? Are you just surfing, corresponding, downloading . . . . . Any site, some, a few?

Thank you for reminding me of that issue, I was aware of it but, at the time, was unable to do much about it.

I had tried to uninstall flash 18 to no avail, your method above also fails, however I have spent the morning digging into the issue and I am hopeful that I have manually removed 18 once and for all (fingers crossed).

Time will tell if the issue is related to this thread issue.

(PS: Graphic driver is up to date)

It is highly variable, sometimes hours, days, even weeks. On any given restart it would be no less than an hour or so of starting.

Note: restarting FF always clears the issue.

My usage is legion both in breadth and depth, but if I had to specify a common usage it would be YouTube.

There appears to be no pattern to where or when the issue starts, but the issue is only detected when mouse or keyboard activity is commenced.

Without any strong evidence at all my gut feeling is it is video related but I detect the onset of the issue generally when making comments on one site or another.

Occasionally, when I exit FF on detection of the problem, I notice that a video remains playing for quite a few seconds after the UI has exited.

Thanks for your interest in the matter, it is very much appreciated.

When multi-process windows in Firefox is enabled then Firefox will use more memory and may be less responsive. Try to disable multi-process windows in Firefox to see if that has effect.

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page: via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

Thanks Cor-El, I think you suggested that in the previous version of this thread, in any case I checked and they are set to false.

With regards to the exiting method, I am not sure how that would help as the real problem is the unresponsiveness of FF, not the resultant crash on exit - which only happens sometimes and seems to be related to HOW unresponsive FF gets before I exit.

Was there some other reason you had in mind for exiting a different way?

Cheers.

You can manually remove that using these instructions;

Type about:plugins<enter> in the address bar. Now search for the plugin.

Example; Adobe Acrobat File: nppdf32.dll,nppdf32.dll Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\browser\nppdf32.dll,C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AIR\nppdf32.dll Version: 11.0.9.29 State: Enabled Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.9

This will show you the path to that program. Copy the Path Only. Also, note the name of the file, and remember it. Now Close Firefox. Open your file browser and paste the path in the address bar. Find the file, and delete it. Now you can restart Firefox. Warning ! Remember to delete the right program.

To be safe, remove all of them. Then install the current.

Does anyone know why I am getting sync error logs of the form: error-sync-1494652539705.txt

When I don't use sync?

These are suspiciously "sort of" date aligned with my problem.

Cheers.

I called for more help.

I see that your question is tagged with 'Sync'. Note that 1494652539705 translates to May 13, 2017, so that was the date this error log got created.

Did you check your extensions recently?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Yes Cor-El, I am querying as to whether these logs are related to the responsiveness problem as they seem to align, date wise, to instances of that problem. I am also querying as to why they are there at all as I do NOT have sync turned on (or even configured).

I have checked (seemingly countless times) that extensions are NOT causing the problem both by running in safe mode *and* by manually disabling them. I have also opened up in a different account. I have tried all of the "obvious things" in all the combinations I can think of - they were all documented in the previous thread (of the same name) to this, but it was mysteriously deleted.

more options

Problem still occurring - seems to be memory related as it always seems to happen around the 1GByte mark - after exiting you can see via task manager that it is still allocating and deallocating memory around that mark.

It also appears to be related to playing videos but then I almost always am doing that so correlation but not necessarily causation.

At least I see that I am not the only one having the problem but there doesn't appear to be a solution as yet.

more options

Approximately when did you first post the mysteriously deleted thread ? It is probably safe and well on our other forum software but will not be accessible for a few weeks month when we move back to the new software, then this thread will be mysteriously deleted. Do you remember did you use the same display name previously ?

I am hoping we will start to warn everyone about the current posts being either immediately assigned to oblivion on roll forward or temporarily preserved in a read only form after rollforward. I started a contributors discussion requesting we put up a banner on the site. See /forums/contributors

My first response to the problem was: https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Firefox/Firefox-gradually-becomes-more-and-more-unresponsive-during-a/m-p/1385897#M1044722

Which was received on 3/4/17 (3rd April for Americans).

Yes same display name.

You will need to set an exception for that site in Firefox as its name and certificate do not match.

more options

Thanks for that John99, at least I can refer back to that thread now. Cheers.

Alas the problem continues, and appears to be worsening.

It certainly seems to be associated with memory. I can't for the life of me understand why FF needs over a Gig of memory with just half a dozen tabs open.

I am sure it is something to do with how it handles videos - there are so many problems in that area now that only youtube performs reliably.

Now I have a problem with FF changing it.s bookmark IDs so that Brief has to keep recreating a new empty subscription folder.

It's a misery but I have invested so much time and effort into FF that it's not a simple decision just to use something else.

more options

Using 1GB of memory may not be too unusual these days. The usual rule of thumb is that using more memory is only bad if you are running low on memory, or having problems only when memory usage is high. In your case you do seem to be associating high memory usage with problems.

  • How much RAM do you have ?
  • I suppose you are on a Windows 7 32bit OS ?

Firefox does have a couple of built in tools, one studies memory overall the other looks at memory on a per tab basis.

YouTube has for quite a while now used HTML5 rather than using FlashPlayer. FlashPlayer is additional third party software used as a browser plugin. Plugins are being phased out because modern browsers can often handle media including Video without needing plugins. Maybe the problem videos are using Flash Player.

I am not sure there is any reason to generate Sync error logs if you are not using sync, Maybe some other user on the computer set up and enabled Sync at some point.

  • What happens if you try to sign in to Firefox Sync without creating an account.
It should not be able to prompt you to use any particular account name.
  • Use: Menu {3bar icon) => Sign in to Sync {twin curved arrows icon) => [Sign in]

Firefox does have a profiler tool. That may be used to gather information about problems when Firefox is slow, but I do not understand its output, and it may be difficult to find someone who does and is able to assist. Filing a bug may help, but it would only be likely to get any attention if

  • The problem is seen in Firefox's safe mode. (So the problem is likely to be seen by a lot of people, and not be related to use of Extensions)
  • Is seen on various sites. (That rules out it being a problem only on one bad site)
  • Does not involve use of Flash Player or Facebook (Flash player is problem prone and being deprecated. The facebook site is very complex)
