Have received email saying I requested ti have my email cut off. I made no such request and cant imagine that mozilla would terminate a email service in such a way

Neither Thunderbird or Mozilla provide you with email service so you are correct they have no way of terminating your service. You get email service from your email provider. You should contact them on this issue.
