Hi there,

This is the first time that I have had a problem with Firefox after many years of use, so hello to everybody.

I have recently upgraded to Firefox 50.1.0 on a Windows 7 laptop.

I did this hoping that it would solve a problem that I started having with Firefox - it would not connect to Youtube.

All other sites loaded fine.

Youtube loads on IE and Chrome.

I therefore upgraded to 50.1.0, but this did not solve my Youtube problem.

I therefore reset Firefox, which seems to have caused even more problems, as now the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once flag keeps resetting itself to false.

What happens is, I have about:config open on one tab along with Tools>Options on another.

I check that browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once is set to true, and close Firefox via the File>Exit method.

I then releaunch Firefox.

At this point although it automatically restores my last session, the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once flag has reset itself to false, meaning that on the second relaunch, it does not automatically restore my last session.

However, If I open restore ression session manually via the History>Restore Previous Session method, it works as expected.

I can repeat these problems with Firefox in both administrator and normal Windows user accounts.

Regarding the Youtube problem, I have also started Firefox in safe mode, and seem to get intermittent success loading Youtube.

One minute it loads, the next it does not.

I have also switched off my Anti Virus and Firewall software (Comodo) temporarily to see if that was blocking Firefox, but that did not seem to make any difference.

I have also checked for Malware with Malwarebytes - no problems found.

So, as you can see, I have tried many things, but still the problem remains.

The only thing thst I have not tried is completely uninstalling Firefox and trying a completely fresh install.

Therefore any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you

... the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once flag keeps resetting itself to false.

That preference isn't meant to be your main way of indicating how you want Firefox to start. It is a kind of temporary flag used to retain your session after certain actions, such as installing or updating an extension that requires you to restart Firefox in order to be effective.

Instead, could you try changing your startup preference on the Options page from "Show my home page" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time": Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

but this did not solve my Youtube problem.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies
Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to.

Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.
  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe websites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

Hi there,

Thank you for replying so quickly.

I followed all of your suggestions, but Firefox still insists on resetting the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once flag back to false after every Exit.

As for Youtube - again, very much the same. Sometimes it loads, but most of the time Firefox will not connect to the site.

If you have any other suggestions for me to try, then please let me know.

Thanks again for trying to help.

Regarding YouTube, what do you get when it doesn't load normally? For example, text only, spinning icon, secure connection error?

Hi again,

Thanks for the reply and info.

In regards to browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once - I could have sworn that many years ago, in order for Firefox to load my last session automatically, I had to set this flag to true.

Anyway , yes your suggestion regarding changing the startup preference on the Options page from "Show my home page" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time" worked perfectly.

I cannot believe that I missed that - I must be losing my marbles. :)

So thank you for your help.

I have also solved the Youtube problem - it seems to be releated to javascript being switched off in Firefox.

I used to be able to browse the internet with javascript turned off and then go to Youtube and switch javascript back on to view videos.

But it seems that this is no longer the case, as I now have to have javascript switched on in Firefox before attempting to load Youtube, or else the page will not connect.

I can only assume that Youtube must have changed something on their pages fairly recently.

Anyway, that seems to be my problems sorted, so thanks once again for all of your help, amd my apologies for missing the obvious! :)

That was very good work. Well done. Please flag your last post as Solved Problem so others will know.
