Homepage hijaacked to chrome://fvd.speeddial/content/fvd_about_blank.html and unable to reset it

In the past I installed the FVD speed dial extensions, however after having experienced too many browser crashes, I decided to remove it. The problem is that my homepage is stuck on chrome://fvd.speeddial/content/fvd_about_blank.html

I've tried "refreshing" firefox. I've uninstalled it, deleted the Mozilla folders under my account's AppData hidden folders. I've reinstalled... and no matter what this bloody things keeps coming back. I've checked that my shortcut to start firefox was not passing arguments too. I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks for any help.

Fred, you got it exactly right, thanks a lot. I do have Advanced SystemCare and they had this Home Page protection thing enabled by default... I disabled it and the problem is gone.

Wow, I was not even thinking of looking at this program. Thanks again!

Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Sounds strange...

Does the speed dial page open:

  • Any time you go Home (e.g., click Home button/Alt+Home, or Ctrl+n)
  • Whenever using the Firefox desktop shortcut/pinned taskbar button
  • Only at startup, not after that

If it's the first one, is your home page setting changing from your preferred page to the unwanted page:

  • when you start Firefox
  • only when you restart Windows
  • at seemingly random times
  • Not Applicable: the home page setting itself is always fine, it's something else!

It happens under both these conditions:

Any time you go Home (e.g., click Home button/Alt+Home, or Ctrl+n)

Whenever using the Firefox desktop shortcut/pinned taskbar button

Even if I change my homepage to something else, it goes back to that the next time I restart firefox.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
