Spell checker is terribly annoying and gets in the way all the time. I really need a way to turn it off.

Hello Shaniasmom, go from 3-bar menu(on your right up corner) > Options > Advanced panel > click the General tab > Uncheck the Check my spelling as I type > close the about:preferences tab. You are ok now :-)
