I get new emails in Thunderbird, but they no longer show up on my Samsung Note 5 until I swipe the screen and wait for them to download. Also, when I delete an email in Thunderbird on my PC, it no longer is automatically deleted from my Samsung Note 5. This is a fairly new problem (2 months or so?) Do you have a solution for this?

I assume you are using IMAP. Thunderbird is a client on your pc, just as your email client on Samsung They both shows whats on the server. And they are supposed to sync with it. (not with each other) So if you delete an email on pc, it should delete on server and your Samsung should sync and not show that email.

So IF the server deletes then your Samsung sync is not functioning If it doesn't your pc doesn't send the delete command or can't connect,

And vice versa.

look at your Samsung if your autosync is turned on for your account. and that you allow data to be send and recieved
