cannot log on to outgoing mail server
Could not log on to outgoing server although I had changed nothing. Contacted my tech guy and reset outgoing server, changed ports, everything. Still cannot log onto outgoing server. Error message just says "message could not be sent for an unknown reason please check server settings and try again" I can send from my webmail, just not from thunderbird. Any ideas? recent update problem?

I don't understand what's the point of trying arbitrary combinations of settings. If the settings were correct so far, check with your email provider if they are still correct.
Please post the settings as per your email provider instructions.
Also check with your email provider if they are having problems.

You are right, there was no need to change any settings as they had worked fine for many months. I think the problem stems from the latest update which was on March 29th. The last message I successfully sent from this account was on that date. How can I go back to the previous version of Thunderbird?

Do you ran any kind of anti-virus/security software with a built-in firewall? If so, make sure Thunderbird isn't blocked.
Have you rebooted your computer since Thunderbird got updated? If not, give it a try.

Reverting to an earlier version isn't really a solution, and there is no guarantee it will solve your problem. This is supposed to work, so it would make much more sense to find out what's wrong.
To reprise: my ISP is Virgin media. I have always used Thunderbird and run my virgin media account and outlook account through it with no problems at all. I have always run my jane@janedoe.co.uk account through it with no problems until the end of March when, following a Thunderbird update, I could no longer log on to the out going server at gridhost.co.uk. The error message is: ""cannot log onto outgoing server for an unknown reason, please check settings and try again". I get incoming mail from that server, no problem. I have checked my firewalls, checked my settings, switch my computer off at night and boot it up each morning. I can use that account with no problems by logging onto webmail but I am stubborn and want to run it through Thunderbird. I am at my wits end as I have tried every fix I can find on the net and still the problem persists. Any more suggestions anyone?

Revert to your original settings from March for gridhost.co.uk. Report back what happens.
Checking the server for SSL issues suggests that it should not be preventing your connection.

Checking the domain information here The mail server for exchanging mail is given as mail3.eqx.gridhost.co.uk. So perhaps you could try that as the mail server name and see how you go. The server name is the one for when I send an email from my server to yours, but usually those names are consistent across server to server and mail client.
It is worth noting that the server DNS record has no SPF record. if you have had difficulty sending mail to particular domains. You might want to add one. SPF is one anti spam tools used by many mail servers.
Thanks Matt - I tried the alternative outgoing server and it times out immediately. As for all the rest of the information you provided I'm afraid it means very little to me - I am just a bog standard domestic computer user and rely on advice and instructions given by the people who set things up for me such as my website and email systems.
Hi Christ1 - have gone back to March settings and the message could not be sent for unknown reasons. Can I change my outgoing server to use either the virgin media or outlook server instead of trying to log on to gridhost? Nione of the settings I have been given have worked for gridhost. I need to use my janedoe address as it is my business address. Also could Virgin media (my ISP) have anything to do with the problem connecting to gridhost? I have been told that they are blocking these servers although they deny that they are doing it. Can I change my outgoing server to use either the virgin media or outlook server instead of trying to log on to gridhost?Probably not, but if you can it'll usually be a bit more complicated.
If they are using SSL/TLS they will probably refuse to "relay" messages from another organization's domain.
However, you might be able to register your gridhost account with one of your other providers, and then you would be allowed to send using their smtp. Google and gmx do this, but I can't speak for outlook.com nor virginmedia.

What error message do you get?
You can run the openssl command yourself to test whether it is a connectivity issue with your ISP.

The certificate cypher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 was introduced in Bug 923089 This was uplifted in May. Thunderbird 45 was an April child.
Could it be the SSL is more than Thunderbird can cope with. The server has other Cyphers, but that this is being offered first might be breaking things. This cypher stuff is really not my comfort zone.
Please try the beta version for here. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ It is based on June uplifts sh might work better. It will certainly prove if I am barking up the wrong tree.
Good point. But I wouldn't necessarily expect that Thunderbird fails to connect because it doesn't support the one ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 cipher suite. Then this cipher suite would need to be the only one supported by the server. Not likely, but possible.

Thanks for the suggestions. As I said before I am just an ordinary domestic computer user and a lot of what you guys are saying is going right over my head. I looked at the error console but I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea what I should be looking for. I feel really useless. I will have a look at the openssl command thing when I have a moment to concentrate on it.
The error message is "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) mail3.gridhost.co.uk for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again."
Matt - I am happy to try the beta version but will it be much different in terms of how I see and use it compared to what I am using now? I don't really have the time and inclination to come to terms with a whole lot of new stuff right now, but if the front end is pretty much the same then I will give it a go.
I have raised queries about this whole business with Virgin Media now to see if they can throw any light on it.
