Suddenly Can't Send, Forward, Reply, Create Emails in Outlook/Hotmail

Running on an iMac purchased late 2010 that is fully updated to latest "El Capitan" 10.11.3.

Ever since I updated Firefox to rev. 45.0, I suddenly lost the ability to send, reply, forward or create a new e-mail in MSN Outlook. Can read, delete etc., but not send/create. Outlook works fine if I use Safari. No error messages, except one that looked like a scam saying Microsoft found an error asking that I not exit, but call an 800 number [disregarded because I get phone calls frequently from obvious scammers with foreign accents that are obviously from a phone bank].

My 10 year old MacBook running "Snow Leopard"[10.6.8, hardware will not support El Capitan] and Firefox 44.0.2 handles Outlook without problems -- don't dare update Firefox.

Routinely clean out cookies and don't visit rogue web sites, or those flagged by "Web of Trust". Firefox Community site has a smattering of similar complaints. Recommendations/fix needed ASAP --- I really like Firefox, which has all my bookmarks etc. and it's a real pain to have to switch to Safari just to do email.

I am an "application user", not a "power user" [that is a "driver" not a "mechanic"] --- that is I don't tweak settings beyond the basic, and have only applications from established companies loaded [Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Web of Trust, Ad Aware, Google Earth, etc.]. The ONLY thing I did was update Firefox to 45.0 before I shut down at night, then found Outlook/Hotmail compromised the next morning when I started up.

Also, the user community feedback page requires that you "sign-in", but there is no info that I can find that tells you how to register and establish a password in the first place -- I'm sure it's obvious, but can't find it.

Assistance would be greatly appreciated. Submitted to Mozilla 14Mar2016 7:42pm

Chosen solution

Hi JohnfromMA, do you have Firefox set to "Accept third-party cookies: Never"? With that setting, Firefox 45.0 was not able to load some sites completely. This is fixed in Firefox 45.0.1, and users have reported that this solves the problems with Outlook.com.

If you haven't already, can you update to Firefox 45.0.1? You can trigger that using the About Firefox dialog as described in this article: Update Firefox to the latest release.

Does the patch fix Outlook.com for you?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies
    Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to.

Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.
  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

Thank you FredMcD -- unfortunately the solution you offered did not resolve the problem cited in my original post. Any further suggestions? [posted 15march2016}

You will have to contact your e-mail provider for more help.

Or are you talking about Thunderbird?

A couple others users reported this in the past couple days, but I don't think the cause has been identified.

Are you now using the new version at https://outlook.live.com/owa/?

When I click New, there is a considerable delay, maybe 5 seconds, and then a new window opens. Similarly, when I click Reply, there is a delay. But I do get a window.

Could you add a popup permission "Allow" exception? You can set that using the Permissions panel of the Page Info dialog.

You can call that up using any of these:

  • right-click (Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Permissions
  • (menu bar) Tools menu > Page Info > Permissions
  • click the padlock or globe icon to the left of the site address, then the ">" icon, then More Information > Permissions

Scroll down to "Open Pop-up Windows" and uncheck the "Use default" box, and then select Allow.

Version 45.0.1 does indeed resolve the problem I had with Outlook/Hotmail. Indeed I do have "Accept third-party cookies: Never" set. My thanks to FredMcD and jscher2000 who took the time to offer their help, and anyone else who looked into this issue and resolved it --- awesome, and much appreciated, THANKS
